Support team and individual learning in your workplace

The combined use of media such as video, written documents, audio and the internet provide more opportunities for education. We now expect a variety of technologies to provide multi-media options, wherever we are, whenever we want it. The public sector should take advantage of these technologies which are powerful tools for learning, particularly where members of work units are geographically dispersed.

The opportunities for communication provided by technology such as Blackberries, mobile phones, iPods, digital cameras, etc. can be used to support learning by teams and individuals. A video can be recorded of someone making a presentation or being interviewed on a topic. When this video is uploaded to a web site then all team members can watch it, regardless of where they are located, at a time of their choosing. While audio conferencing is a useful communication tool video conferencing is even better as people can observe body language as well as listen to it. People learn in different ways, whether by listening, observing behaviour, reading or putting something into practice. Media casting provides the opportunities for a variety of learning styles.

Support your role as a team leader

In an ideal situation a team leader would have regular face-to-face meetings with team members, spending time with them to get to know their circumstances. When a team is geographically dispersed then a team leader should make an effort to get all team members together sometimes. If communication with team members can not always be face-to-face then other options include video or audio conferencing, telephone calls and emails. Documents can be uploaded to websites which are only accessible to members of a group. Conversations can be posted or team members can participate in on-line discussions. It’s important to make sure that all team members receive the same type of communication and information.

This year our E-learning Innovations Project, being developed in patnership with IPAA, has as it’s focus on mobile technologies and social networks. The Project, funded through the Australian Flexible Learning Framework, really started as a simple “Wouldn’t it be good if students could upload media from wherever they are, using whatever mobile technologies they have?” idea, it has however meant our Team has had to overcome considerable technological challenges to even come close to being able to do what we set out to do.

To achieve our goal we had to come up with the platform that could cope with the complexity of the demands we had in mind for it and the versatility to respond to the changing needs of our students, and clients – that alone took quite a while. We are already using Moodle and WordPressMU however neither of these would really do what we needed. Then we came upon BuddyPress, which is a WordPressMUPlugin which basically turns WPMU into a social networking environment.

Simultaneously, we were searching for a way to enable students to upload media in response to our vodcasts, a media dialogue of sorts. And we wanted students/facilitators to be able to engage with the environment from a variety of mobile technogies.

This is the first post from the WordPress iPhone Application direct to the Network@harrisbromly site.
