Project 3 reflection Jennie Whyte

Task 2 of project 3 required two interviews to be conducted using current technology and uploaded to a web page where the interviews could be watched by anyone with access to the site.

Support team and individual learning in your workplace

The combined use of media such as video, written documents, audio and the internet provide more opportunities for education. We now expect a variety of technologies to provide multi-media options, wherever we are, whenever we want it. The public sector should take advantage of these technologies which are powerful tools for learning, particularly where members of work units are geographically dispersed.

The opportunities for communication provided by technology such as Blackberries, mobile phones, iPods, digital cameras, etc. can be used to support learning by teams and individuals. A video can be recorded of someone making a presentation or being interviewed on a topic. When this video is uploaded to a web site then all team members can watch it, regardless of where they are located, at a time of their choosing. While audio conferencing is a useful communication tool video conferencing is even better as people can observe body language as well as listen to it. People learn in different ways, whether by listening, observing behaviour, reading or putting something into practice. Media casting provides the opportunities for a variety of learning styles.

Support your role as a team leader

In an ideal situation a team leader would have regular face-to-face meetings with team members, spending time with them to get to know their circumstances. When a team is geographically dispersed then a team leader should make an effort to get all team members together sometimes. If communication with team members can not always be face-to-face then other options include video or audio conferencing, telephone calls and emails.  Documents can be uploaded to websites which are only accessible to members of a group. Conversations can be posted or team members can participate in on-line discussions. It’s important to make sure that all team members receive the same type of communication and information.

One response to “Project 3 reflection Jennie Whyte”

  1. Val says:

Thanks Jennie for your reflections. Certainly their are lots of opportunities for learning using different technologies and I like the fact that you have picked up on its appeal to different learning styles, although certainly we have to accept that it does not appeal to some.

The need for consistent communication to team members who may be dispersed geographically is also an important insight.

    Thanks Jennie.
